Case Study: The Gentlemen, Season 2
This is a job that I’ve had to sit on my hands for a long time, it has been an exciting prospect and the release has come. However, sometimes things don’t go through to the finish line as planned; lots of work goes in and in the end tough decisions are made.
In the music industry it is a pursuit that requires, at times, an incredible amount of resilience.
This week’s release of The Gentlemen Season 2, by Guy Richie was one of those moments that we’ve been sitting and waiting on for over a year now. Three options for regal fanfares were prepared and sent to the amazing London Fanfare Trumpets for the incredibly dynamic coronation dream by the lead protagonist Eddie Horniman in Episode 2.
The musicians look spot on and the scene works so well (keep an eye out for the trumpeters in the opening scene!).
Alas, after all the preparations and conversations with the wonderful Lauren Wilson at 45rpm music supervisors, the recordings of the fanfares ended up on the cutting room floor. C'est la vie!
The score by Chris Benstead, and orchestration by Giles Thornton, were sublime and as much as it feels disappointing to miss out on a great spot on a hit show, the music must always serve the scene.
